Raise Your Game: Why you should join a Sports Society at University!
Settling into your new home for the next three years, meeting new people and getting to grips with higher education. The first few weeks of university can be overwhelming!
University is more than just studying. It’s a time when you grow as a person, make lasting friendships and create memories that will stay with you for life. At Decathlon Club, we’re proud to have been a part of students’ university experiences across the UK by providing Custom University Sports Kits !
Four major ways a Sports society can raise your game – in your studies and beyond:
1. Build your network
Making friends at university can seem daunting. Joining a Sports society can give you a community of like-minded people. Sharing victories, defeats and exhausting training sessions with teammates can end up being the highlight of your week.
It won’t all just be training and matches. Sport Societies usually hold weekly socials – these can be anything from going on nights out, pub quizzes to a team trip somewhere sunnier than the UK!
Joining a society will also give you a great chance to build your network! You never know – one teammate might be able to help you in your professional life after graduation.
2. Stay active and organised
Keeping up with lectures, readings, assignments and revision, you can quickly become inactive at university. Having regular training sessions with a Sports Society can give your week structure and will keep you active.
On top of the physical health benefits, sports are incredible stressbusters! There’s nothing like a good physical workout to clear your mind and re-calibrate after a tiring day of lectures and seminars.
3. Develop skills for life
There’ll be opportunities to compete against other universities. Apart from improving your game skills, you will develop skills that you can transfer to a future internship or employment:
- Time management – Proving you can balance extra-curricular activities with your studies
- Leadership – Join the Society Committee. Take up responsibilities such as designing and ordering custom kits for the team.
- Teamwork – Setting and achieving goals (both literal and non-literal ones) with a team.
- Communication – Being in sync with teammates, the committee and even the Student Union.
Show employers that you are a well-rounded individual, with genuine interests outside of your professional aspirations.
4. Break out of your comfort zone!
You may be worried about not being “good enough”. Maybe you’ve never played a particular sport before. Everyone starts from somewhere! University is a great time to try something new. Societies are always welcoming of new members regardless of skill level!
You might end up discovering a passion that you never knew you had!
Get Started
You’ve got nothing to lose! Your future self might even thank you for it.
- Look for beginner-friendly societies if you’re new to a particular sport
- Make a short list of societies you like the sound of and attend a session for each one
- Don’t feel pressured to commit immediately!
- Ask about membership fees, kit, and equipment requirements
- Check if the training times fit your weekly schedule
